It’s a lovely sunny weekend so far so I thought I’d bring out the dread and play some old style sun splash reggae.
It would be easy to go for big Bob but I’ve got a real soft spot for Peter Tosh. Heres the intro from his Wiki page….
Peter Tosh, born Winston Hubert McIntosh (19 October[1] 1944 – 11 September 1987), was a Jamaican reggae musician who was a major member of the musical band The Wailers (1963-1974), and who afterward had a successful solo career as well as being a promoter of Rastafari.
Peter Tosh was born in Grange Hill, Jamaica with a father and mother too young to care for him properly. He was raised by his aunt. Nicknamed ‘Stepping Razor’, he began to sing and learn guitar at an early age, inspired by American radio stations. After a notable career with The Wailers and as a solo musician, he was murdered at his home during a robbery.
This song probably did as much to bring him some main stream attention as any other although I think Mick Jagger gets some grief in the You Tube comments but it’s a long time ago and fashions move on!
Reading Ronnie Wood’s and Keef’s bios you get a feeling they dig the reggae vibe for the music and the life style associations. I recently listened to Keef’s ‘Wingless Angels’ recordings which just drip sunshine and Nyabinghi. You can stream pretty much the whole album here.
…..but back to Peter Tosh. As it’s the holiday season, here’s two for you.
